How Core Values Help Businesses
When you hear the word “values”, what pops into your head? Are they connected to how you were raised? Are they in line with your religious or spiritual beliefs? Do they manifest in your day-to-day life?
Values can shape our outlook on life, decision-making processes, sense of purpose and duty, and can even strengthen relationships. But they don’t stop at our personal lives. Businesses can (and should) have core values as well. For organizations, values are their DNA and heartbeat. They shape how you hire, how you guide behavior, how you define your culture, and how you make decisions.
At Who Staffing, we are guided by 4 core values:
Be Connected
Be Intuitive
Be Selfless
Be Authentic
When we say “be connected”, we mean build meaningful relationships. This can be with clients, candidates, co-workers, and the world at large. When we say “be intuitive”, we mean connect the dots and help solve problems. We want our employees to be solution-focused rather than issue-focused. When we say “be selfless”, we mean to put the needs of others ahead of your own. Client and candidate needs must take priority. When we say “be authentic”, we mean to be comfortable in your own skin. We have created an environment where our employees are encouraged to be their true selves. This allows them to create genuine human connections.
How do core values help your business?
Core values aren’t a “nice to have” or something that you can just “set and forget”. Your core values should live in all your business decisions as they will provide both internal and external advantages to your company. Here are some advantages to establishing strong core values.
Employee Attraction and Retention. Yup, core values play a role in attracting top talent. You’re more likely to attract candidates who have similar values to yours, or believe in working for a company with a strong value system. They also play into keeping employees happy. Working for a company with a vision and strong philosophy is way more fulfilling and motivating than the alternative.
Employee Engagement. Keeping employees engaged in your company goals is essential to retention. When you build a culture and set goals around clear core values will ensure that everyone is on the same page and fully engaged and motivated to meet those goals.
Shape Culture. You can look at core values as character traits within a culture. By building a culture around these ideal character traits, those within the culture will have a mutual understanding of and respect for emulating those traits. Without strong values, there is no strong culture, and with no strong culture, you’re left with employees that are disjointed from one another and from leadership.
Growth and Stability. The workflow that happens in order to grow and remain stable is way more streamlined when core values inform end goals and decision making. This way, there is a common foundation for everyone to be on the same page. When you ignore the values set in place and diverge from common ground, your company will suffer from less engaged, less motivated employees, and unclear goals.
